4chan's /b/ is, by far, the most popular imageboard on 4chan.org. /b/ is home to a thriving internet culture that is primarily based on the production and reciprocation of image and text-based memes. Those who frequent /b/ have traditionally referred to themselves as /b/tards, but newer contributors are also likely to refer to themselves as Anonymous. The "development" of /b/'s culture is a popular topic on /b/, as are dirty pictures, gore, and kittens. What is /b/? While 4chan is technically similar to several Japanese imageboards, it is uniquely notorious for its random forum, /b/. Like all bulletin boards on 4chan, /b/ is an imageboard, meaning that all original (or thread-starting) posts must be accompanied by an image. Posts are grouped in threads attached to an original post. Like all other boards on 4chan, /b/ caches a limited number of threads. Because new threads are created constantly, a thread's survival depends on new posts. All threads eventually die, and because threads (and the images they contain) are not archived on 4chan, users have significant freedom to ignore the board's rules and post offensive or even illegal content. /b/, as an 18+ "random" board, has traditionally been known as a sporadic host of pictures depicting pornography, gore, and images depicting the worst that the Japanese psyche has so far produced. Contributors/b/ is populated by furries, otaku, wapanese, Asians, otherkin, and average white children who wish they were special. This latter group has been radically mischaracterized by Fox News as a group of anarchic hackers on steroids, who use /b/ as a secret base. Only special people frequent /b/; they just go there for free porn/CP, because they're too poor from having spent the last of their drug-money to pay off their bail from being arrested for having "censored fun" with 53.5 babies. But they could just be going there for some other reason. Memes/b/ is host to a thriving internet culture of pædophiles and furries, built around image macros and interaction between users in comments. /b/ culture mandates that, when confronted with a known image macro or phrase, a user respond appropriately. When done successfully, this type of interaction produces a lengthy thread in which the content of the original post evolves gradually until a user posts illegal content (causing the thread to be deleted) or the thread exceeds the board's maximum post count. This method of communal interaction and approval lends itself to the production of memes, or shared concepts within the community. /b/ culture consists, in large part, of copying and pasting portions of existing memes (therefor labeled as copypasta) into new threads. Traditionally, /b/'s many references to memes made it difficult for new users to interact with the community until they had lurked long enough to develop their own experiences within the community. Tl;dr. /b/ folderBecause /b/ is an imageboard, it is a source of unique and entertaining images. Because all things on /b/ are temporary at best, regular users often save a local copy of content that appeals to them. Within /b/, this local copy is commonly referred to as a user's /b/ folder. A /b/ folder typically contains images posted in threads or screenshots of "epic", or uniquely memorable, threads. Over time, the /b/ folder has become an integral part of /b/ culture. Files that depict early posts or retain their original filename, size, and modification attributes are seen as valuable, and as an indication of a user's experience and status within /b/. The conditions that inspire /b/ folders have also led to the development of online /b/ folders such as jj.am, and an online archive of memorable /b/ threads. /b/'s Influence Many of the most popular images and sayings found on the internet originated in /b/. The spread of /b/ memes has produced several schools of thought. First, many long-time internet users who are familiar with /b/ and other communities feel that internet culture, as a whole, has been diluted by the rampant (and often unwitting) spread of /b/ memes. Second, many new /b/tards have acquired the self-righteous presumption that all internet memes originated on /b/, and will fly into an incoherent rage if they are contradicted. Within /b/, many users are uncomfortable with the spread of content that originated on /b/, the fact that /b/ is seldom acknowledged as the source of such content, and the apparent fact that /b/ has stagnated to the point where its culture can no longer outpace popular culture. These issues are typically discussed as symptoms of the cancer that is killing /b/, a topic that is increasingly popular on /b/ itself. The Great /b/ Civil War of April 15th 2007The internal conflict over the nature of /b/ came to a head on April 15th, 2007. The day found /b/ engaged in a typical Stickam raid, during which /b/ came across "gretchiie," a 15-year-old camgirl. Gretchiie, as is typical of camgirls, obliged /b/ with a peepshow, which was promptly recorded on video. For major lulz, a /b/tard posted her address and school name. /b/ (being /b/) emailed the video of Gretchiie's show to her school's Principal, 4 Vice-Principals and Secretary. This outraged a faction of /b/-tards (labelled on /b/ as moralf#gs), who said that the ruin of Gretchiie stepped across "the line" and was entirely un-lulzy. Members of the faction—who were tacitly amenable to guro, scat, and furry pics; numerous raids on Habbo Hotel; and the utter ruin of individuals like Hal Turner — drew the line at reposting the nudes volunteered by a camgirl. The strength of the faction demonstrated the large population of people from Habbo, Gaia and Newgrounds who pose as /b/-tards, but who lack the combination of intelligence, wit and a skewed moral compass that once made /b/ great. They are truly the cancer that is killing /b/. The situation was exacerbated by the Virginia Tech Massacre, which occurred on the following day. /b/'s reaction to the Virginia Tech Massacre was typical (for /b/), and included posting disgusting guro and rule 34 of Seung-hui Cho shooting a student in the head while defiling the corpse of another on the personal MySpaces of dead college students. AnonymousOriginally, /b/ was notorious for its users and content. Since early 2008, /b/'s notoriety has shifted to its affiliation with "the group known as Anonymous." The media became acutely aware of Anonymous in January 2008, when online indignation led to large, worldwide, IRL protest rallies against Scientology. According to a report by Fox 11 in Los Angeles, Anonymous is a cell of domestic terrorists that h4x MySpace accounts, mess with Online Children's Games, and blow up yellow vans for "EPIC LULZ." Fox also states that 4chan is full of Hackers on Steroids. /b/ was associated with the protest group because the term anonymous (as it is used by people who identify themselves as Anonymous) originated on /b/ with /b/'s forced anonymous policy. Because of the association of /b/ with Anonymous, /b/ found itself the subject of a well-written and uncannily accurate essay that appeared in a popular German technology magazine. For more information, see DAS TROLLPARADIES. But What is /b/ Really Like?  Originally, everyone who was finally permabanned from Something Awful or found Ogrish.com too tame called /b/ home. Pedophiles who crawled out from not4chan went there to post and collect illegal pictures, but they usually do not last long, as posting of illegal images is technically a permabannable offense. /b/'s mods frequently sticky their own posts, attempting to create memes, sometimes spamming stickies until the entire board is just a place to view the mods' stickies. If a celebrity dies, anyone can go directly to /b/ for the traditional eulogizing of the still warm, perhaps still alive—body. Following a catastrophe, /b/ will be first on the scene with shoops of the event. As of 2007, /b/ has been hopelessly overrun with a stream of puerile, immature posters. Unless you're interested in posts that consist of "i luv a gurl, what do I do /b/ XD =]" or massaging the ego of an ugly and socially-stupid OP, don't bother.
