Typically abbreviated as "LJ," LiveJournal is a free online journaling service created by Brad Fitzpatrick under the Danga Company. It is owned by Mena of Six Apart, who described LiveJournal as "a journaling service with a lot of teen girls screaming OMG." It was recently sold to the Russian company SUP, creating many conspiracy rumors.

LiveJournal has become the most popular blogging service over such rivals as Blogger and Xanga due in part to friends list features and its unique way of leaving comments on other users' posts, both of which are infamous for creating avalanches of drama.

Users

Those who use LiveJournal are called LJ Users, LiveJournalers or, LJers. On the internet, LiveJournal has a reputation for being a seething, attention-starved hivemind of histrionic teenage girls, furries, homosexuals, middle-aged virgins, old memes and the occasional fundie nutcase. Such a collection of drama obviously needs referees to occasionally keep combatants apart. The self elected junta of LiveJournal, LJ Abuse fulfills that role.

The Great Strike-Through of 2007

On May 29th, 2007, a right wing group named Warriors for Innocence informed LiveJournal's sponsors that their ads were being displayed on a site that harbored pedophiles, resulting in all advertising being pulled from the blogging service. In a knee-jerk reaction, Six Apart decided to delete any journals related to pedophilia, furries, shotacon, and lolicon. While this probably sounds like a good move, the Six Apart staff took the house cleaning a little too far and wiped out journals from survivor communities and groups discussing the book Lolita.

Users were outraged at the loss of their favorite journals and communities and began various protest journals and communities. In the end, after days of fighting, news posts, involvement of the printed media, and a visit from the EFF, Six Apart acquiesced and many of the delete journals were restored.

Flagging

Eager to repeat its earlier blunder, LiveJournal implemented a flagging system on November 29, 2007. The system offered two new features: the ability to flag one's journal as adults-only and a little flag button next to every journal entry that would immediately notify LJ Abuse. Since the LiveJournal community is well-mannered and level-headed and its users would never abuse such features, they were widely accepted with great praise.
