Lol, short for laugh out loud or laughing out loud is the most popular, prolific and abused acronym on the Internet. It is considered an acceptable substitute for an actual response in many social circles. It is rarely used to mean lots of laughs or lots of love by timid old people and AOL users.

Variations

• irlol - In real life, laughing out loud. Used to denote something that was so funny you actually laughed in real life. Whereas lol is usually used sarcastically or ironically, IRLOL is typically sincere.
