Lulz is laughter at someone else's expense, heavily based upon the German concept of Schadenfreude. Whereas other forms of internet humor, such as lolcats, are innocent in nature, the value of lulz gained by an action is directly proportional to the amount of anguish and embarrassment of the victim.

The term was coined by internet celebrity jameth as a plural variant of lol and caught on quickly in various online social circles. The now infamous Fox News piece on Anonymous presented lulz as a corruption of "lol" in order to express the cruel intent behind lulz-generating activities of everyone's favorite group of domestic terrorists.

Widespread usage of the term led to the invention of the phrase I did it for the lulz, which is used as justification for almost any action resulting in the physical, mental or emotional harm of a person or group of people. A common example is the attribution of the Holocaust to a joke by Hitler. Similarly, the term epic lulz has come to represent an event or action which yielded an unusually high quantity or quality of lulz-worthy results. This works as a disclaimer because if you do it for lulz, it wasn't because you hate someone - essentially, it was just for fun.
